Vishakha’s Solar Glass Production in Mundra: Setting Records in Glass Manufacturing!
Vishakha Glass, in collaboration with India’s prominent player in integrated glass manufacturing–Asahi India Glass Ltd. (AIS) is set to launch its next-generation and India’s largest greenfield solar glass manufacturing facility at Mundra, Gujrat. In phase 1, the plant will have a capacity of 4 GW.
“We are delighted to partner with Vishakha group in their vision of creating the entire ecosystem and value chain for indigenizing solar energy generation in India,” says Mr Sanjay Labroo, Managing Director & C.E.O. of Asahi India Glass Ltd (AIS).
With this manufacturing capacity, Vishakha Renewables will establish itself among the leaders that humbly want to contribute to India’s renewable energy goals.
Solar Glass: A critical component in Solar Panels
Transparency, water resistance, aesthetics and light trapping functionalities make solar glass a critical component of solar panels. Solar glass has exceptional heat transmission abilities and is one of the few materials on the earth that can bear consistent sun exposure. It plays multiple roles ranging from acting as a shield to protect PV cells to allowing the transmission of sunlight to solar cells. Owing to its versatile properties, as well as its ability to support eco-friendly recycling methods solar glass is an indispensable component of solar panels.
Vishakha Renewables’ Pioneering Role in Shaping India’s Solar Glass Manufacturing!
After the COVID-19 situation, the rest of the world is reducing its dependence on imported products. Indian Government is taking all steps to help Indian companies and startups to create self-dependencies and policies like Make in India are conducive to the growth of India-based manufacturing.
Vishakha Group aims to create an ecosystem of solar glass value-chain. Solar glass is an essential component of solar panels. Therefore, we cannot rely on one or two countries to import the required components and raw materials like solar glass. Such dependencies cannot fulfil our needs for an uninterrupted supply chain in the solar industry. To solve the problem, it is necessary for domestic players to contribute to India’s renewable energy goals. With this context in mind, Vishakha Group has partnered with Asahi India Glass to create a futuristic solar PV glass manufacturing plant that will reduce India’s dependence on Chinese suppliers.
The Government of India is serious about renewable energy initiatives and it reflects in its latest decision to impose a 40% solar panel import tax in April 2022. However, the current production capacities in India are not at the self-sufficient level and therefore, the government is reconsidering lowering the taxes by 20% as of May 2023. This explains why indigenous manufacturing is critical.
Vishakha Group’s decision to join Asahi for creating India’s largest solar PV glass manufacturing plant will decrease the need for imports in future and will strengthen India’s solar capacities.
Opportunities in Renewable Energy Industry
India Among Top Global Hotspots for Solar Energy Production
The limitless energy from the Sun makes it an ideal source for harnessing energy needed to satisfy global energy pursuits. It is further prudent to develop solar energy projects in a country like India, which is near the Equator and receives a sufficient amount of sunlight throughout the year. Moreover, multiple studies have found that rooftop hotspots in India are much favorable for solar energy generation. Also, the barren lands, deserted areas, canals, unused roofs, etc. can be utilized to deploy solar energy plants.
Government Support and Encouragement
With favorable taxation for solar installations and support to solar manufacturers under various schemes and also a strict stance on imports, the Government of India (GOI) is creating positive avenues for solar companies in India. Vishakha Renewables will be a key beneficiary of any further reforms and favourable taxation policies by the GOI.
Huge Potential on the Demand Side
Indian solar glass market size was 434.3 Thousand Tonnes in 2022 and is expected to reach 728.3 Thousand Tonnes by 2028 as per the IMARC Group. This translates to a whopping CAGR of 9.2% for the period 2023-2028. The ongoing construction projects, the demand for sustainable infrastructure by the corporate world, and the plea to reduce thermal energy reliance to power HVAC appliances are major reasons contributing to an increased demand for solar panels and as a result solar glass. Current tax exemptions and subsidies by GOI are further leading to growth in residential solar plant demands.
Wrapping Up
Vishakha Renewables is aiming to break the PV glass bottlenecks and supply constraints by becoming a part of the largest solar glass manufacturing plant in India. The company’s investment in a solar glass production facility is a testimony to its commitment towards the development of an emission-free world.
